I don't remember at which point it began, but the open the new launcher text now leads me to a screen with the header "check your account" and the text "minecraft launcher is currently not available in your account. I tried making a new business email and then a new Microsoft account with the new email, re-login, and got the exact same message. This has me log into my Microsoft account and then tells me that windows hello pin is not available for personal emails. I don't have one of those, so I went to my settings to set one up. I clicked get, and follow the options, until it tells me to enter my windows hello pin. The open the new launcher part is a clickable link to the minecraft launcher page on the store. I opened my launcher, clicked on the side bar option "minecraft for windows", and am met with the play button displaying the text "incompatible with launcher" and directly above the text displays "minecraft for windows cannot be launched with this version of the launcher. I have always used Java edition up until this point, but I want to play with some friends who play bedrock so I want to be able to play on bedrock which, according to my research, should be possible.
